Senior Engineering Manager simulation

A day leading the Eligibility Platform team

Carelink Health · Healthcare3+ yrs 60 min

You're the Senior Engineering Manager for the Eligibility Platform team at Carelink Health, a fictional US healthcare platform: care providers call your API to check a patient's insurance before an appointment. Today the API starts failing before 9 AM. Investigate it in ServiceNow, Splunk, Freelens, Vault and Insomnia, raise the emergency change, then keep the rest of the day moving: an unsafe Copilot suggestion, a pull request with a SQL injection, a partner file that broke the nightly load, a real-time design decision, a sprint re-plan, a Product director who wants a demo to 'look live', and a summary for your director.

💻 Simulations run best on a laptop or desktop.

#eligibility-team standup

Morning all. Heads up: on-call got a few 503 alerts from the eligibility API around 08:55, I'm looking now. Also Neha's partner load from last night shows "completed" but the row counts look off. What do you want us on first?

Your objective

Keep eligibility checks working and patient data safe, and keep your team and stakeholders moving in the right direction.

Before you start

  • It's 9:00 AM ET on Tuesday, October 13. The day runs in real time: about an hour for the whole day.
  • Your team: Ravi (senior engineer, on call), Neha (data pipelines), Arjun (junior engineer), Sara (SDET) and Dev (SRE, on leave Thu–Fri). Meera Iyer is Director of Product; Tom Becker, your manager, is Director of Engineering; Kiran Rao approves production changes.
  • Investigate with the real tools: Splunk (logs), Freelens (Kubernetes), Vault (secrets), Insomnia (API calls) and the S3 browser. Looking around costs nothing; acting does.
  • Java code is checked by inspections, like the IDE's own, not run. The Python loader runs real tests.
  • This is healthcare: patient data (names, dates of birth, member IDs) must never end up in logs, notifications or demos.
